This classroom course teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. This course is designed to meet OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction.

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens was designed specifically for workers with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as 

  • Childcare workers
  • Security guards
  • Maintenance workers
  • School personnel
  • Hotel housekeepers
  • Health and fitness club staff, and
  • Tattoo artists

The Heartsaver BBP Course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and tagline, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act™,” to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training. Students learn to

  • Protect themselves from blood or blood-containing materials.
  • Act quickly and safely.
  • Clean the area that has blood or blood-containing materials.
  • Tell their supervisor about the incident

Instructors who want to teach Heartsaver BBP course must be content experts knowledgeable of OSHA Standard 1910.1030. Instructors should also have reviewed the Heartsaver BBP student and instructor materials and/or taken the online course. It is the responsibilty of the individual instructor to review all course materials before teaching. We have included the documents provided by AHA as downloads below, please review each document and purchase the needed materials before teaching this course.

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course may be taught two different ways, as an instructor-led course or an online learning course. The Heartsaver Instructor-led training is conducted in a classroom setting and features group interaction and hands-on coaching and feedback from an AHA Instructor. The online learning course can be completed either at work, home, or wherever students have Internet access. Upon successful completion of the online course, students will receive a course completion certificate to document completion of the course.  There is no hands-on skills component to the course.

Cards for the Bloodborne Pathogens course are included with the student book. It is required that every student receive a book for the class in order to receive a card. The Bloodborne Pathogens cards allow space for the student's name, instructor's name and issue date. These three fields may be handwritten on the card by the instructor. The Bloodborne Pathogens card is the ONLY card that can include the month, day and year and have the date handwritten.
